“In order for us to continue to be one people, it is vital to maintain a dialogue between the Diaspora and Israel” - Israel Harel, Haaretz, April 22, 2010

Recently, the Dorot Fellowship in Israel and the ROI Community realized the extent to which our goals overlap with one another. As organizations working with young Jewish innovators, activists, social entrepreneurs and artists, we see great potential in collaboration between ROIers and Dorot Fellows. To this end, we created the ROI-DFI Partnership Program. Together with the 2012-2013 Dorot Fellows, a group of ten ROIers will be selected to participate in the program which will engage with critical questions related to the relationship between Israeli and Diaspora Jews. Participants will form new bonds while exploring the personal implications of issues such as, but not limited to:
  • What unites Israeli and Diaspora Jews? What divides us?
  • Does Israel speak for the entire Jewish people? Do Diaspora Jews have a right to impact Israeli politics without living in Israel and serving in the army?
  • What are the implications of Diaspora philanthropy in Israel? How does this personally impact both Israeli and Diaspora Jews?

Through this program we hope to achieve the following goals:
  1. To develop relationships between and create a network of Israeli and North American innovators, activists, social entrepreneurs and artists.
  2. To learn about diverse perspectives on issues critical to Israel and Diaspora Jewry.
  3. To enhance participants’ understanding of their own connection to these critical issues.

Program Components:
The program will include an initial meeting for the Israeli participants and two over-night seminars for the full group:
  • Thursday, January 3 from 18:00-20:00 – Location TBD
  • Thursday, January 10 from 9:00 – Friday, January 11, 2013 until 12:00 – Location: Tel Aviv
  • Wednesday, January 30 from 18:00 – Friday, February 1, 2013 until 12:00 – Location: TBA
Full participation in the entirety of both seminars is required for participation in this program.

Language:

While the application form is in Hebrew, it can be answered in either Hebrew or English and the program will be held in English, thus a high level of English comprehension and speaking is required of ROI applicants.

Honorarium:

Upon completion of the program, with full attendance, ROI Participants will receive an honorarium of NIS 1,800. In addition, participants will be reimbursed for travel to/from seminars.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact No’a Gorlin at noa@roicommunity.org

WHAT IS THE DOROT FELLOWSHIP IN ISRAEL (DFI)?

The Dorot Fellowship in Israel is a competitive fully funded one year fellowship sponsored by the Dorot Foundation. The Dorot Fellowship is designed to assemble and empower a network of young Jewish lay leaders to enliven the North American Jewish landscape. Ten Fellows between the ages of 22 and 30, coming from a wide rage of professional and academic backgrounds (journalism, law, education, medicine, social work, business and the arts are just some examples) are chosen each year to live in Israel, where they sharpen the characteristics and skills, acquire the experience, and broaden the networks required for Jewish leadership in the 21st Century.

The Dorot Fellowship encompasses both individual and communal learning experiences. On the individual level, each Fellow creates a Personal Learning Program, comprised of formal and experiential Jewish learning, Hebrew language instruction and volunteer activities. On the communal level, the fellows are responsible for planning and executing weekly seminars on topics central to Israeli society and politics, along the way practicing leadership skills by leading their peers, identifying areas of personal growth necessary for more effective leadership and actively working to improve their leadership capacities.

Thus, the Dorot Fellowship assists Fellows to advance their leadership capacity, to develop a sophisticated understanding of Israeli society, and to address both the breadth and depth of issues critical to the Jewish community. Upon their return from Israel, Fellows participate in the Dorot Fellowship Alumni Network, an ever-growing cadre of innovators, reformers, creative artists, organizers and activists who are working together to enliven the North American Jewish landscape.
