Nicole Hyman is a 23-year-old new media graduate from Rhodes University, South Africa. She grew up in a country where media has played a pivotal role in shaping how people perceive the ëother.í Since the age of 6 she has wanted to be a journalist. She is fascinated and a little obsessed with media. During her first year at university she started organizing a journalism class trip to Rwanda. Rwanda is an example of how media can impact peopleís lives ó as it was media that was used to start the 1994 genocide. Although the trip never materialized, she feels her philosophy as a journalist has been influenced by events in Rwanda. She strongly believes in citizen and mobile media ó in giving the voiceless a voice. Having recently made aliyah, she feels she can use her knowledge of new media to empower and hopefully affect positive change in Israel.
