| Maya Norton is a nonprofit fundraiser, philanthropy blogger, freelance writer and Israel advocate. She blogs at The New Jew: Blogging Jewish Philanthropy and is an Israel author for Global Voices Online.
Maya believes that every practicing Jew in the modern world is a Jew by choice. Informed by the values of tikkun olam, Maya has volunteered on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, done public health advocacy in Latin America and has worked as a teacher, youth leader and human rights activist in the United States and Israel. Raised as a "cardiac" Jew whose connection with Judaism was linked to family, education and responsibility to the community, Maya's connection with Israel was a gift from Birthright. She now works with Israeli universities, specializing in Jewish philanthropy, with the goal of creating and strengthening community connections with Israeli Jews and Jews abroad.
