March 2010

Esther Kustanowitz  /      03/29/10

esthermar16Most of the time, the posts I put up at ROICommunity.org aren't my personal reflections. But during my Pesach prep this week - which included everything from flying cross-country to catching random ROIers in NYC to helping my parents to prepare their house for the holiday - it occurred to me how relative oppression can be, and how our desire for freedom is therefore, also relative.

During the second ROI Summit, I spent some time with the Visions of Israel track - and during their session, several of the Latin Americans in attendance sat for the first part of the panel's presentation, as panelists talked about how to combat anti-Israel sentiment on campus. Then one of them raised her hand and said, very respectfully, that the discussion about American campuses was totally worthless to Latin American Israel advocates - in Argentina, Venezuela and other locations, standing up for Israel wasn't just uncomfortable or unpopular, it was dangerous.

Recently, another ROIer from a Middle Eastern country recently relocated to the United States - I asked him what motivated the move, and he said it was dangerous to be Jewish where he was from, and he wanted a better life.

Freedom is...well, different things to different people.

What is Passover really about, anyway? G-dcast.com is glad you asked, and here's their answer.

G-dcast is produced by Sarah Lefton (ROI 2006-2007, staff 2008), this episode is also directed by Lefton, written by the indefatigable Matthue Roth (2007) and stars Bill Selig, aka, Mr. Sarah Lefton.

I know it seems like the Olympics are barely over and it's already time for Passover. Well, if you're not willing to let go of feats of strength in favor of embracing flatbread, you'll want to check out the new Passover video from ROIer and animator extraordinaire William Levin (with a noble acting assist from ROI 2008 videographer Zach Timm).

It is my pleasure to invite your review of and participation in Haggadot.com, a new open-source site for haggadah content, which will help Jews around the world personalize their Passover seders. As some of you may know, I've been working on this for a long time, and it's very exciting to be at this stage when I can share it with my ROI Community and ask for your input. Haggadot_Logo

Canadian-Israeli rapper Shi360 on "GIGO," making the right connections, and where his music comes from. Check out the Leadel.net video profile of Shai Haddad (ROI 2006). Plus, after the Leadel interview, make sure to scroll down to view a bonus clip - from 2007's Israelity Tour, an Israeli rap tour organized by ROI alumni Sydney Henning, Lindsay Litowitz and Lauren Eisenberg, and featuring Shi360, Jerusalem band Coolooloosh, and ROIer Michelle Citrin.

Antithesis-The-Zionist-Rapper-199x300Last month, thanks to the generous support of theROI Speakers' Bureau fund, I was able to travel to Israel to film my first-ever music video, "Proud to Be a Zionist," in collaboration with two fellow ROIers whom I had met as participants in the Arts & Culture track during last year's ROI summit. I worked closely with Ziv Maor, an Israeli film producer, to put together the right team on the right budget to shoot the film. Elad Shoshan, who was also on our track, is an expert on events and helped us with the venues.

The concept of my new song, "Proud to be a Zionist," is all about reclaiming the word Zionist, and reinforcing what it is all about: freedom and self-determination for a persecuted people; democracy; equal rights etc. I want to remind people of this and make people proud to say they are Zionists; I feel that unfortunately Israel's enemies have misappropriated the word to mean something which it does not; this in turn makes people unwilling to use it freely.

I wanted to shoot in Israel partly to be able to utilise the talents of my ROI friends, but also because it seemed the most appropriate place to make a 'Zionist' video. We shot in various locations around Jerusalem during the day of filming and I'm sure that the fact that we were able to do the video in Israel's capital will reinforce its message.

On my way to LimmudLA, I flew in 2 days early to meet with Rabbi David Levin-Kruss (DLK) my mentor from the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, DLK and I worked on many ways to use Bible Raps to teach the tradition to adults. We've taught over 30 times in Jerusalem but this was the first time we brought it to the States for gigs for Hillels in San Diego. Then, on to LimmudLA we went.

When I arrived, my partner in rhyme Ori Salzberg (I met him at Presentense) was waiting for me in the lobby;  the people all around looked psyched to get the day started.  While there, the number of my sessions went from 4 (the formal limit) to 7.

Day 1

"How gangsta can Bible Raps get?" Ori and I performed a few songs and got feedback and reaction as to pedagogical import and appropriateness as well as dopeness

What's a Rapper? What's a Jew? This session was Ori, Rabbi DLK and me: it was the highlight of my teaching career. With the very intelligent, young audience, we took a closer look at identity and Judaism. DLK made it all come together like ribbons tied into a bow. All participants took home a Torah present. That is how DLK does.

ROI/Friends of Innovation party - That night I hung out with a lot of ROIers

In a nutshell, Itza Mitzva is a liberal mitzvot study group that I lead once a month with my rabbi in Chicago. The first Wednesday of the month, we head to Matilda, my favorite bar, and tackle a mitzva or issue from a Jewish perspective. We pick the topic - past topics have included kaddish, mikva, kashrut, preparing for High Holy Days, abortion and modern sexual ethics. Itza Mitzva is supported by an ROI grant and was my project in both 2007 and 2009.

I started Itza Mitzva in 2006 after a well-documented blog fight with CK of Jewlicious. Our fight? Where can Reform Jews learn about mitzvot. I realized most adult Reform Jews didn't take Intro to Judaism like I did, and that my synagogue lacked this opportunity. I asked Rabbi Michael Zedek if he would teach a mitzva study group and we've been meeting ever since. ROI's Speakers Bureau helped to fund my trip to Los Angeles and Long Beach for Jewlicious Festival 6.0, so I could go and teach college students about Itza Mitzva. While I was there I led a session of Itza and then spoke on a panel about DIY (do-it-yourself) learning.

How does Itza work?

March 19-20 is the National Day of Unplugging, in which everyone is being encouraged to relinquish the hold that technology has on them and re-engage in the offline world. A group of Jewish artists created the Sabbath Manifesto, and its ten core principles, as part of a search for "a modern way to observe a weekly day of rest. The group are all members of Reboot, a non-profit group designed to “reboot” the cultures, traditions and rituals of Jewish life."

The ten principles of the Sabbath Manifesto are enumerated on their site and include ways to create a meaningful Shabbat experience, whatever a person's religious level: avoid technology, connect with loved ones, nurture your health, get outside, avoid commerce, light candles, drink wine, eat bread, find silence and give back.

Join the Sabbath Manifesto Facebook group, or follow SabbathManifest on Twitter.

This video explains some of the reasons to unplug - it was filmed by Liz Nord and features Michelle Collins (both ROI 2009).
