In the aftermath of the Carmel Forest fire, the worst in Israeli history, NU Campaign teams up with Israeli rapper SHI360 (aka ROIer Shai Haddad), to bring the HOPE for Carmel Forest T-shirt and video Campaign.

The song "Hopeful," produced by SHI360 and featured in the video, expresses his childhood bond with the Carmel forest and the incredible shock in seeing it go up in flames. The video draws attention to the heroism and bravery that emerged from events.

ROIers Shai Haddad and Mischa Spritz, along with Rabbi Yonatan Neril are an inspiration as they show us how to get involved. Together with SHI360, PresenTense, Bring It In Israel, and Eco Jewish Seminars, Nu Campaign have launched a T-shirt and Video campaign in support of the restoration of the Carmel Forest.

Although the pursuit of Tzedek and Tikkun Olam is galvanizing increased numbers of young Jews worldwide, few opportunities exist for meaningful communication and collaboration between Israeli environment and social justice professionals and their colleagues around the globe. Until now.

Thanks to a multi-year investment by the UJA Federation of NY, totaling $415K, three leading Jewish nonprofit organizations – Bema’aglei Tzedek in Israel, Hazon in the United States and the Jewish Social Action Forum in the UK – have launched Siach: An Environment and Social Justice Conversation, a brand-new, global network of experienced Jewish environment and social justice professionals, as well as highly dedicated lay leaders, from Israel, North America and Europe.

JGooders, a ground-breaking online initiative launched to great fanfare at the 2008 GA, has announced it is formally closing down next week.

As we wrote back in May, JGooders, while continuing to receive and process donations, was undergoing a reorganization. Unfortunately for the philanthropic community, that reorganization is now leading to closure.

It has been three weeks since the fires first started blazing in Israel's North. From this tragedy came a very powerful reminder to us all. First,  it showed how much we each care about Israel – whether we live in Israel or elsewhere around the world, we united around this cause. Second, we were given the opportunity to show what a difference we could make in a short amount of time.

Together with the matching contribution from Lynn Schusterman, the ROI Community and its networks raised $20,000. There were 120 individual donations, averaging $80.

This remarkable feat demonstrates what power we have when we leverage our network.

According to Israel National News, China is asking Israeli experts for assistance in fighting child abuse.

At a five-day seminar in Xi'an, a city of ten million in central China, a team from the Jerusalem-based Haruv Institute, which provides innovative training in identifying and fighting child abuse and neglect, is training a group of 40 Chinese pediatricians. The seminar is led by Dr. Yoram Ben Yehuda and Dr. Gabriel Otterman and Sanford R. A friend and colleague of mine, Caren Levine from DarimOnline, recently tipped me off to Wild Apricot, a great site that provides resources for nonprofits. As someone who occasionally offers webinars (and sometimes takes them), I was thrilled to learn about this resource, which embodies today's approach of providing things of value for free, even though the company itself develops software for nonprofits (so technically, they also have a for-fee service, but most of the online offerings in the blog are free - devoted mostly to free techniques, tips and offerings that nonprofits of any size will benefit from:

Wild Apricot Blog is dedicated to small associations and non-profits. We discuss the challenges faced by volunteer and small-staff organizations, cover web technologies that help you do more with less, and keep you up-to-date about our own software.

Lynn Schusterman

It is with both great respect and grave concern that I write today, as the six-month moratorium on the conversion legislation proposed by MK David Rotem draws to a close.

I was among the Jews in North America who welcomed the call for a freeze on this proposed legislation and supported the appointment of Jewish Agency Chair Natan Sharansky to lead the efforts in finding an acceptable solution to this issue, one that is of critical importance to the unity of the Jewish people. (Read The Perils of the Israeli Conversion Bill.)

Should the proposed conversion law go into effect, I fear it would send a dangerous, exclusionary and wholly unacceptable message to many: that there is only one “official” brand of Judaism. Most of North American Jews—85 percent—belong to, or identify with, the Conservative and Reform movements, which would be directly—and negatively—affected by this proposal.

The ROI Community mobilizes for a Carmel Fire Relief Fund

The fire is finally out.  Now the work begins.

Lynn Schusterman is challenging us, the members of the ROI Community -

For every donation made to the Carmel Fire Relief Fund by an ROI member or friend of a ROIer, Lynn will match that donation dollar for dollar.  And for those of you here in Israel who are able to volunteer your time, efforts and resources – a donation to the fund will be made in your honor.

We encourage everyone to give a donation – even a small donation of $18.  Using the power of our network these small sums can add up to a significant contribution.  Donations of up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar over the course of the next 10 days.
