At the initiative of ROIers themselves, and specifically, organizers Dana Sender and Talia Gorodess (both participants of the 2011 ROI Summit), approximately 50 ROIers arrived at TLV Hub on Tuesday, November 15. TLV Hub is one of those funky open-plan offices that give the impression that working there would be somewhat akin to starring in a quirky and clever office-based sitcom. The feeling of fun and the buzz of creative energies was certainly palpable and the night proved to be more than just a wonderful union of ROIers.

More than 50 passionate and committed Jewish leaders and activists from 15 different Ibero-American countries, gathered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the 2011 ROI Ibero-American Gathering. On the opening night, using colored markers, posters and candy, participants gave fellow participants a taste (also quite literally) of their homes.

Dr. King and the Jewish Organization Equality Index

by Adam Simon

On a chilly Sunday a few weeks ago, I took my children to see the new Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial off the National Mall. As we walked across the Potomac River, seeking distraction from the biting wind, we discussed why Dr. King deserved such an honor.

At five and eight years old, their questions were poignant and telling: it was not the fact that someone had fought for equal rights and freedoms that bewildered them – it was that he had to fight for it as recently as when their grandparents were in college.

For the past three years, I have been chronicling the ongoing process of spend-down at AVI CHAI, a foundation located in Jerusalem and New York with programs in Israel, North America, and the former Soviet Union. The third annual report, titled Shifting the Spend-Down into High Gear: A Foundation Begins Implementing Its Strategy, is now available.

2008 Financial Crisis Likely to Affect Assets and Grantmaking Through 2015

New York, NY – November 17, 2011. According to a new report from the Foundation Center, a small but important subset of grantmakers – those who work on issues ranging from human rights to environmental justice – has been disproportionately impacted by the global financial crisis and their recovery remains in jeopardy. Diminishing Dollars: The Impact of the 2008 Financial Crisis on the Field of Social Justice Philanthropy examines historical trends in foundation assets, spending and giving levels; describes strategies used by foundations to cope with depleted assets immediately following the crisis; and presents projections through 2015 for asset and grantmaking levels.

Key findings of the study indicate:

In an era where discussions about Israel are increasingly polarized, we must keep remembering to ourselves, and reminding others, that Israel is a complex place, and not just a concept - regardless of our political orientation. This is the driving notion behind my desire to continue working with Israeli artists, promoting and publicizing their work around the world.

Thanks to the ROI microgrant, I was able to organize a book launch event for Sternthal Books latest publication, Guy Yanai's monograph 'First We Feel Then We Fall.' The event was held in the Christie's boardroom at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, surrounded by Modigliani's Picasso's, and DeKoonings.

In a ground breaking new initiative, the Jewish Agency is teaming up with local philanthropists to make Israel experiences more accessible to young Argentinian and other Latin American Jews.

The Fund for the Jewish Future (Cono Sur) will grant its first million dollars in 2012 for pre- and post-birthright programs, professional internship trips to Israel, social action programs and Israel experiences for the smaller “interior communities” where assimilation is higher than in the large coastal cities. The fund is a partnership between the Jewish Agency and local Argentinian philanthropists to provide Israel experience programs to their own young members. The funders have committed an initial $1m. to be spent next year.

Think you’re web 2.0-savvy? SMMU shines a light on what students don’t know, taking us through the bricks-and-mortar functionalities of online marketing platforms. Not for the faint of heart, Social Media Marketing University (SMMU) obliged me to take what I knew about new media and prod, poke, squeeze and stretch my assumptions. The result: real, tangible legs for abstract cloud-based social media that, let’s face it, serve as oxygen for business ignition.

Warm autumn sky, a mega-stage, bicycle-powered ice cream and over 450 people celebrating sustainable Jewish living....

On September 25, 2011, Eden Village Camp held our first annual Festival of Eden. The event was a tangible way for the community to experientially connect with principles of sustainability, environmentalism, and Jewish tradition.
