ROI Community  /      01/23/12

 by Edoe Cohen

I was neither born nor raised in Israel. My Israeli parents moved to the States in the late 70s and I grew up in Los Angeles, where I never really felt very American. I also never appreciated or understood why my parents insisted on sending me to Hebrew school and summer programs in Israel. Looking back, I think I did understand that my family was different. That all of us Israeli transplants, my parents, their Israeli friends and all the kids, were different.

Ian Sternthal  /      11/17/11
By Ian Sternthal, ROI Micro Grant recipient

In an era where discussions about Israel are increasingly polarized, we must keep remembering to ourselves, and reminding others, that Israel is a complex place, and not just a concept - regardless of our political orientation. This is the driving notion behind my desire to continue working with Israeli artists, promoting and publicizing their work around the world.

Thanks to the ROI microgrant, I was able to organize a book launch event for Sternthal Books latest publication, Guy Yanai's monograph 'First We Feel Then We Fall.' The event was held in the Christie's boardroom at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, surrounded by Modigliani's Picasso's, and DeKoonings.

Maital Guttman, recipient of an ROI Micro Grant, creates a love story to impact Israel and beyond.

What do you have when you combine Israel, lesbian and film together? Sadly, you often get a violent, unhealthy, and delusional portrayal of the LGBT community. This is what I experienced when attended the Lethal Lesbian Film Festival.  Though the festival has good intentions and an amazing group of women who run it, the films submitted unfortunately make lesbians seem crazy, disturbed, and void of meaning.
“Where is the love?” I wondered after the festival.  “Where is the feel-good love story?” I asked my friends.
