Hi fellow ROIers!

This year I had the honor of taking part in the Tikvah Fund Fellowship, a full-time, year-long, paid program based in NYC. As recruitment for the 2012-2013 Fellowship begins, I thought I would briefly share my experience so far, hoping it might be of use to any of you who may be interested in applying.

Well-known rabbi Joseph Telushkin, in his book on Jewish humor, attributes the classic Jewish sense of humor to the need to “laugh to keep from crying.”  Throughout our journey spanning thousands of years, the Jewish people have had much to cry about.  In just 63 years of its existence, the state of Israel has gone through enough ups and downs to fill many a history book, prompting legendary Israeli songwriter Naomi Shemer to pen the classic song “Al Kol Eileh” (On All These) which recounts both the highs and lows, the bitter and sweet.

It feels like just yesterday that I stood on the ROI Summit 2011 stage with my new Idea Competition team members and my jaw on the floor. Yossi Vardi had just told us that our idea for IsraCorps was “grand” and Lynn Schusterman herself told us that a Jewish Peace Corps was her “life’s dream.” Perhaps the most profound part of that moment was the standing ovation given to us by the ROI Community. It was one of those rare moments in life when you know something truly special is happening. Something big was taking shape. As we stepped off the stage, we were patted on the back, high-fived and fist-bumped. We were overwhelmed with offers to get involved and support this idea that resonated so deeply with everyone in the room.

At the initiative of ROIers themselves, and specifically, organizers Dana Sender and Talia Gorodess (both participants of the 2011 ROI Summit), approximately 50 ROIers arrived at TLV Hub on Tuesday, November 15. TLV Hub is one of those funky open-plan offices that give the impression that working there would be somewhat akin to starring in a quirky and clever office-based sitcom. The feeling of fun and the buzz of creative energies was certainly palpable and the night proved to be more than just a wonderful union of ROIers.

In an era where discussions about Israel are increasingly polarized, we must keep remembering to ourselves, and reminding others, that Israel is a complex place, and not just a concept - regardless of our political orientation. This is the driving notion behind my desire to continue working with Israeli artists, promoting and publicizing their work around the world.

Thanks to the ROI microgrant, I was able to organize a book launch event for Sternthal Books latest publication, Guy Yanai's monograph 'First We Feel Then We Fall.' The event was held in the Christie's boardroom at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, surrounded by Modigliani's Picasso's, and DeKoonings.

Europe is so often referred to as the major battleground for public diplomacy where Israel is concerned. Even with such knowledge, we often find that a majority of Jewish and Israel educational efforts are focused on English-speaking countries and communities; namely North America. Resources, speakers and training is often scarce for some of the most passionate members of the young European Jewish community. In an effort to continue further outreach in Europe, I was granted a unique opportunity through a recent ROI Micro-Grant to address participants of this year’s EUJS (European Union of Jewish students) annual summer seminar in Greece.

In Israel, the summer of 2011 opened with a cottage cheese war and ended with the largest protest in the country's history, sparked initially by Facebook complaints over housing prices.  On Motzei Shabbat, September 3, approximately 400,000 Israelis took to the streets demanding social justice.
