While being very active in the area of Jewish renewal in Israel for several years now, I only heard the name Limmud for the first time during ROI summit 2011 – but there I heard it over and over and over.


So when LimmudNY approached and I was fortunate to obtain ROI’s Micro Grant to participate in my first Limmud, I tried to contribute back by volunteering in several positions (which definitely seems to be the great spirit of the conference) and by giving three workshops.

In December, 2011 around 25 young leaders from across Europe gathered in Jerusalem to attend the  seminar organized by Yad Vashem and EUJS. Thanks to Yad Vashem, we were able to participate in lectures and workshops conducted by eminent specialists. Participants had the unique opportunity to learn about the museum and research institute from the inside, to find out many interesting facts and to exchange opinions with other young jews. The wonderful seminar gave us a broader and deeper perspective on issues concerning the Shoah.

Limmud is a utopian version of university. As this was my first Limmud Conference, I hadn’t known quite what to expect, but I was thrilled to spend a week transported back to the best aspects of my college years. My schedule was busy from morning to late night, but at Limmud, I could attend only those classes that most interested me. There were no tests and no papers, no pressure or deadlines, and the lecturers were all leaders in their field.

On September 25, 2011, Eden Village Camp held our first annual Festival of Eden. The event was a tangible way for the community to experientially connect with principles of sustainability, environmentalism, and Jewish tradition.

The most recent Limmud FSU Festival for young Russian-speaking Jews took place in Odessa, Ukraine, last week. More than 600 young adults from 14 countries, including Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, USA and Israel, participated. Additionally, Limmud FSU successfully collaborated with the European Jewish Union bringing young adults from Germany, France, Belgium, Britain and even Gibraltar, to Odessa.
