Computer nerds are not the image I normally conjure when someone mentions the words “community” or “teamwork.”  However, my experiences at an implementer’s meeting for an open source software community last month strongly challenged this preconception. After spending several days with this passionate group of self-proclaimed geeks, I left awed by how their community had embodied open source ideology and enabled individuals across the globe to effectively work together towards sustainably meeting a common goal: improved health.

Think you’re web 2.0-savvy? SMMU shines a light on what students don’t know, taking us through the bricks-and-mortar functionalities of online marketing platforms. Not for the faint of heart, Social Media Marketing University (SMMU) obliged me to take what I knew about new media and prod, poke, squeeze and stretch my assumptions. The result: real, tangible legs for abstract cloud-based social media that, let’s face it, serve as oxygen for business ignition.

Prior to almost all Jewish Festivals, I find myself pondering (for at least the twentieth time in my life) what it is we’re about to celebrate or commemorate... G-dcast's new Shavuot animation is a must - it is informative, catchy, fun and entertaining for little kids, bigger "kids" and adults!

Following our post from Friday, Developing a Social Media Policy, we thought it a good idea to remind our readers about social media metrics.

As nonprofits make expanded use of social media, many are still struggling with a concept that is second nature to them in other areas of fundraising: metrics.

The Social Media Group of Convio Services has created a guide “Going Social: Tapping into Social Media for Nonprofit Success,” which offers the following suggestions for social media metrics:

Blogs, Facebook and Twitter (among others) are not new. Most of us regularly utilize them to some extent to promote the work of our organizations. And, unfortunately, all to many organizations do so in a haphazard manner.

The AVI CHAI Foundation has developed a set of policies for those using these tools on behalf of the foundation and its grantees. While these policies may not be applicable for your organization, they should spur development of your own guidelines.

The AVI CHAI Foundation Social Media Policy

AVI CHAI encourages staff and Trustees to be champions on behalf of the Foundation, LRP, day schools and overnight summer camps. The rapidly growing phenomenon of blogging, social networks and other forms of online electronic publishing are emerging as unprecedented opportunities for outreach, information-sharing and advocacy.

Technology and Storytelling: Seeking Support With Multiple Channels

by Richard McPherson

The power of a good story is widely understood in philanthropy and fundraising, whether it is the effect of a disease, the transforming impact of education or the struggle of wildlife. Fundraisers also recognize that the most powerful storytelling occurs when one person talks passionately, face to face, with another. Charities have long attempted to transfer the authenticity and power of personal communicating to other means, notably direct mail, phone calls and e-mail. Thanks to a talented and restless technology sector, the creation of new tools continues through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google and many more, and charities are challenged to tell their stories in many new settings. In terms of fundraising performance, the results are decidedly mixed or at the very least difficult to measure.

Bucking the trend of technology that allows people to tell everyone that they’ve checked into their local restaurant, cafe or bar, Reboot has developed a smartphone app that helps users “check out” of the internet altogether. The app ironically will use technology to shut down technology.

Think of it as rehab for the smartphone. By using technology, the Sabbath Manifesto app is intended to spur a massive movement away from technology on the National Day of Unplugging, March 4-5, 2011 and beyond, and a return to the values inherent in a modern day of rest: reconnecting with family, friends and the world around them.

The inverse of tools like FourSquare that allow you to check into a venue or location and notify friends where you are, the new Sabbath Manifesto app, for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry and other smartphones, announces to your social networks and online community through Facebook and Twitter that you are unplugging and will not be available online.
