North America

A few years ago, the ROI Community and LimmudLA teamed up to present "Friends of Innovation," a casual get-together for people to meet and network over drinks, and also to schmooze about Jewish life, culture, tradition and innovation (2010 video here).

Then in 2011, Jumpstart and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles joined ROI and LimmudLA as sponsors of the event, which by then was named "Cocktails for Innovators" (2011 video here).

But 2012 demanded something that was evocative of the warmth and feel of the original, but with a little bit of disruption to challenge the way we think about living and being Jewish in this richly innovative and creative time.

While being very active in the area of Jewish renewal in Israel for several years now, I only heard the name Limmud for the first time during ROI summit 2011 – but there I heard it over and over and over.

So when LimmudNY approached and I was fortunate to obtain ROI’s Micro Grant to participate in my first Limmud, I tried to contribute back by volunteering in several positions (which definitely seems to be the great spirit of the conference) and by giving three workshops.

To explain to my children what Chanukah was like for me as a young girl, I find I am just as inclined to recount what it wasn’t as I am to describe what it was. Growing up in northern New Jersey in the Cohen household, driving through the wealthier neighborhoods (those which my parents reminded me still blocked the sale of homes to Jews through the 1960s) to see the elaborate Christmas displays through our car windows was always part of the winter season. My brothers and I watched Charlie Brown’s Christmas and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. In school we had “holiday” parties where we ate gingerbread cookies off of red and green plates, sucked on candy canes and sang Jingle Bells.

B
efore settling into this soon-to-be holiday classic of a story, I feel the need to share a few things about myself so that some of the details make sense. Beginning with:

I am Jewish. Now if you’re wondering what Irish county us Collins Jews lived in, the answer is the one in Eastern Europe where all the other Jews lived. My immediate family changed our last name to Collins when I was a little girl, after years of people spelling and pronouncing our given name incorrectly. And by people, I specifically mean the hostesses at our local trattoria, T.G.I. Friday’s.

My parents chose Collins after the famous Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, the city where I was born and raised. This truth conflicts with the common misconception that my birth father was actually famed funk bassist and notable hat enthusiast Bootsy Collins.

Hi fellow ROIers!

This year I had the honor of taking part in the Tikvah Fund Fellowship, a full-time, year-long, paid program based in NYC. As recruitment for the 2012-2013 Fellowship begins, I thought I would briefly share my experience so far, hoping it might be of use to any of you who may be interested in applying.

The ROI Grant helps in ways you can’t even imagine. After exhausting all resources in an IP (Intellectual Property) issue my organization encountered, I noticed that ROI could help with legal support. I filled out the online form and within days, I had responses. The best part about the process was, it wasn’t just ROI setting me up with their lawyer.

Speakers Bureau Micro Grant

I have been blown away by the concept of microgranting and how small money can make a big impact. Both from ROI as well as a federation taskforce I sit on in NYC at the Jewish Federation. I had the idea that this microgranting philosophy could be beneficial to other federations and communities. But most people have different definitions of microgrants.
