At the initiative of ROIers themselves, and specifically, organizers Dana Sender and Talia Gorodess (both participants of the 2011 ROI Summit), approximately 50 ROIers arrived at TLV Hub on Tuesday, November 15. TLV Hub is one of those funky open-plan offices that give the impression that working there would be somewhat akin to starring in a quirky and clever office-based sitcom. The feeling of fun and the buzz of creative energies was certainly palpable and the night proved to be more than just a wonderful union of ROIers.

By Anja Walson who received an ROI Micro Grant to attend JPropel in August, 2011.

Leaders combine the qualities of being both on the dance floor and on the balcony. These words by the magnificent rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand recently reminded me of the powerful impact of the ROI Community.

In Israel, the summer of 2011 opened with a cottage cheese war and ended with the largest protest in the country's history, sparked initially by Facebook complaints over housing prices.  On Motzei Shabbat, September 3, approximately 400,000 Israelis took to the streets demanding social justice.

“Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. …. get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted.
Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually.
Abraham Joshua Heschel

On a recent Shabbat evening in Uppsala, Sweden, a group of over fifty Jewish young adults from across Europe gathered together to welcome Shabbat. A discussion ensued in the spirit of Heschel’s conception of radial amazement and how it might apply to them individually or as a group.

by Mira Marcus.

The first time I met the ROI phenomenon was at last year's summit. I was invited to give a master class on the topic of "How to interview to the media."

I approached the area of the summit, and immediately felt the passion in the air. The master class was oozing with talented people. I felt it in my bones: "I must be part of this adventure in next year's summit!"

ROI Community  /      04/12/11
The following post has been cross-posted from Esther Kustanowitz's blog, My Urban Kvetch.

On Thursday morning, the ROI Community sent out letters to a total of about 550 people. While many were elated at receiving acceptances to the 6th annual ROI Summit, many more were disappointed to learn that they wouldn’t be offered a space this year. And still others remain in limbo – hoping that they’ll be redeemed from the waitlist and sent up to the big show.

This happens every year – although not always with close to 600 applicants, more than half of whom probably would have made amazing contributions to this year’s summit and to the ROI network as a whole. But we just can’t have a 300-person ROI Summit: even if the cost and capacity weren’t factors, twice as many people would mean a dilution of the intensity of the conversations and the intimacy of the five-day Summit experience.

Personally, I have people from my immediate network who are on all three lists. So I’m like emotional tofu these days – at an even keel by myself, then alternately happy, sad, and in suspense as well, depending on the emails, Tweets, or phone calls I’m getting. Some people are angry that they weren’t accepted, others are hurt and feel like they’ve been told they don’t have anything of value to offer the network (or the Jewish innovation world). And that’s just not okay with me.

So I decided to suggest some things to remember about the ROI network that may help you look beyond your particular 2011 Summit status - whatever it is - and identify ways in which you can access the ROI network and conversations, this summer and all year.

700 Teens from Gaza-Belt Communities will be Treated to the Justin Bieber Concert

Young Jewish innovators partner with Jewish philanthropists to make it happen

When the missiles and mortars began falling again on Sderot and other besieged Gaza-belt communities last week, social entrepreneur Nir Kouris went into high gear to give local teens a break. He immediately approached ROI Community of Young Jewish Innovators, where he is a member, with an idea to find the funding to bring 700 kids to the Justin Bieber concert Thursday night. The Schusterman Foundation in Israel, The Morningstar Foundation, a private family foundation based in the Washington, DC area, and ROI Community responded with lightning speed. This enabled the entire project to move quickly.

“I feel blessed to partner with The Morningstar Foundation to counter the din of missiles and mortars with the exuberance of rock music for these young Israelis,” said Lynn Schusterman.

Impresario Gad Oron, the Bieber concert producer, agreed to provide discounted tickets for the children from the southern communities. The Israel Association of Community Centers is identifying and chaperoning teens in Sderot, Shaar Hanegev, Ofakim, Merchavim, Gan Yavneh, Shafir, Yoav, Yavneh and Kiryat Malachi, as well as providing buses.

Justin Korda, ROI Community’s executive director, emphasized the speed and dynamism of the operation, despite the daunting logistics. "We're a global network with Israel at the center,” he said from ROI headquarters in Jerusalem. “Our member identified an opportunity to bring some joy where it's urgently needed and, thanks to The Schusterman Foundation, The Morningstar Foundation and the Israel Association of Community Centers, we will be able to give these kids an unforgettable evening."
