ROI Grants

Evonne Marzouk  /      12/13/11

On November 17-18, I had the privilege of participating – with many other ROI and young Jewish leaders – in the NextGen Charity event in New York City.  It was quite an opportunity to hear from some of the most interesting and innovative leaders in the charity field, and of course to meet many people seeking to do the same!

For some people New York City is a fashion center, for others it’s a background of well-known films, but for me, being a founder of  Jewrnalism, it was the “next step”, discovering a Jewish diaspora that not only enabled me to learn about my project but also to rediscover Jewish life in Poland. I found myself in the USA thanks to a Micro Grant from ROI, which was enough to buy a plane ticket. This type of opportunity was one that could not be missed by me or my partners and advisors from Jewish Jumpstart, who recommended I attend the conference in Boulder, organized by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and cleverly called NetWORKS.

If I’ve learned anything about how to succeed as an entrepreneur since receiving an ROI Seed Fund grant, it’s the importance of knowing the audience for your product. You want to have researched the audience so well, you can nearly visualize all the individual characters who will one day become your clients. As such, though I didn’t hit all the targets I’d originally laid out for myself and AgriGateAsia (AGA), I have certainly come to understand my role in the market. I’ve also laid the foundations for my online business intelligence site and newsletter so that when it fully launches publically it will hopefully succeed.

Computer nerds are not the image I normally conjure when someone mentions the words “community” or “teamwork.”  However, my experiences at an implementer’s meeting for an open source software community last month strongly challenged this preconception. After spending several days with this passionate group of self-proclaimed geeks, I left awed by how their community had embodied open source ideology and enabled individuals across the globe to effectively work together towards sustainably meeting a common goal: improved health.

It feels like just yesterday that I stood on the ROI Summit 2011 stage with my new Idea Competition team members and my jaw on the floor. Yossi Vardi had just told us that our idea for IsraCorps was “grand” and Lynn Schusterman herself told us that a Jewish Peace Corps was her “life’s dream.” Perhaps the most profound part of that moment was the standing ovation given to us by the ROI Community. It was one of those rare moments in life when you know something truly special is happening. Something big was taking shape. As we stepped off the stage, we were patted on the back, high-fived and fist-bumped. We were overwhelmed with offers to get involved and support this idea that resonated so deeply with everyone in the room.

Think you’re web 2.0-savvy? SMMU shines a light on what students don’t know, taking us through the bricks-and-mortar functionalities of online marketing platforms. Not for the faint of heart, Social Media Marketing University (SMMU) obliged me to take what I knew about new media and prod, poke, squeeze and stretch my assumptions. The result: real, tangible legs for abstract cloud-based social media that, let’s face it, serve as oxygen for business ignition.

Warm autumn sky, a mega-stage, bicycle-powered ice cream and over 450 people celebrating sustainable Jewish living....

On September 25, 2011, Eden Village Camp held our first annual Festival of Eden.  The event was a tangible way for the community to experientially connect with principles of sustainability, environmentalism, and Jewish tradition.
