In my experience, ROI consistently achieves its goal to connect community innovators across the World.

Like Moishe House, it has a model that I hope other cultural, social and religious communities around the world learn from, empowering and enabling those who already have motivation.

It feels like just yesterday that I stood on the ROI Summit 2011 stage with my new Idea Competition team members and my jaw on the floor. Yossi Vardi had just told us that our idea for IsraCorps was “grand” and Lynn Schusterman herself told us that a Jewish Peace Corps was her “life’s dream.” Perhaps the most profound part of that moment was the standing ovation given to us by the ROI Community. It was one of those rare moments in life when you know something truly special is happening. Something big was taking shape. As we stepped off the stage, we were patted on the back, high-fived and fist-bumped. We were overwhelmed with offers to get involved and support this idea that resonated so deeply with everyone in the room.

SEFWI WIAWSO, Ghana — When I told my friends and colleagues that I was coming here to learn lessons for Israel, many were puzzled. Surely, they thought, Israel should be teaching Ghana, not the other way around. But this remote corner of southwestern Ghana, near the country’s border with Ivory Coast, provided me with many lessons that will affect the policies promoted by the organization that I run, the Green Zionist Alliance. Thanks to fiscal support from ROI and NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, I was able to travel here to study international food policy and learn ways that Israel could become more environmentally sustainable by emulating this small country in sub-Saharan Africa.

This is the first in a three-part series.

Yael Assor, 26, is a social activist living in Jerusalem. Originally from Be’er Sheva, she moved to Jerusalem to attend Hebrew University, which was where she learned about Bema’aglei Tzedek (“Circles of Justice”), an organization that raises awareness and engages the public to take action to make lasting changes in the area of social justice. Today, Yael is the coordinator of the Tav Chevrati (“Social Seal”), a certificate granted by Bema’ageli Tzedek to restaurants in Israel that treat their workers ethically and are handicap accessible. She is also pursuing a Master’s degree from Hebrew University in sociology and anthropology.

Premshay Hermon, recipient of an ROI Micro Grant, describes his experiences with "Brave."

"Brave" Festival is an annual event taking place in the beautiful city of Wroclaw, Poland. Dating back over 1,000 years old, it is no surprise that Wroclaw has yielded a festival of ancient traditions. Marching with the slogan "Against Cultural Exile", the "Brave" festival is all about mutual respect. For one week A variety of carefully chosen ceremonies and traditional performances "lend" themselves to one of Europe's most exciting cities, and receive center-stage, literally: a  traditional Healing ritual, that hosts disease-demons humorously singing and dancing, takes place in the backyard of the theater institute (`Tovil`); a Hindu ensemble from Kerala performs 'Kathakali' dances from the ancient Ramayana for two hours (this is the short version, an average show can last 4-6 hours); men and women from the Bwa tribe in Burkina Faso perform the 'Masks of the Moon' ceremony, with white & black full-body masks and magnetizing voices of genuine singing and drumming; and many more.

In the field of innovation, the term “innovative” is almost always paired with the word “young.”

Admittedly, at first glance, these two terms seem a natural fit. As Bill Drayton, the founder of Ashoka, the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs, points out, the development of high-caliber social entrepreneurs is largely linked to taking initiative at an earlier age. He bases his assertion on both experience and research: in a study of more than 2,500 Ashoka fellows, the organization saw that a significant number of these social entrepreneurs had first experienced the power of being change-makers in their younger years.

When Jeff Sachs speaks, people listen. Even if they don't agree with his policy prescriptions, his voice is authoritative, compassionate and demands our attention. On June 1, he addressed the crowd at Uri L'Tzedek's first annual Spring fundraiser, "And Justice For All," held at Midtown Loft, in Manhattan.

Recent articles in the Jewish media have cited critical differences between Jews under 40 and ”older Jews” and have made reference to “stark generation gaps”, “deep generational divides” and certain ideas “not resonating with Jews under 40”. Will I think so radically differently in 11 months? Will I be ‘unfriended’ by my social media cohorts? Will I no longer be their cohorts, statistically speaking?
