For ROIers, Wednesday and Thursday brought a process of consideration, conversation and creative ideation.

Through Open Space facilitation, Idea Mixology, personal consultations, and many cups of coffee, ROIers spent hours generating dozens of ideas and uploading nearly 50 of them online through a site called IdeaScale. Each idea was the product of at least three ROIers - some ideas were brand new and some the products of years of thought. On Wednesday, the system was closed to new ideas, and it was time for an intensive 24-hour period of voting – not just for those at the Summit, but for ROIers and friends worldwide, who were following along on the internet. Voters were also encouraged to provide comments, suggestions, resources, offer of collaborations and any other thoughts they might be able to contribute to help the ideas grow. The ideas with the most votes -  - would get the opportunity to present at Thursday’s Innovation Showcase - a panel of people who are involved in a wide range of corporate and non-profit worlds: Yossi Vardi, Noa Tishby, Yossi Abramowitz and Danna Azrieli.

It was Morning Motivation on Day 3 of the 2012 ROI Summit, and as Pascale Bercovitch shared her awe-inspiring story, there was not a dry eye in the room.

An Israeli journalist and athlete originally from France, Pascale was only 17 when she lost both of her legs in a tragic train accident. As she lay beneath the train tracks that freezing December day, her legs severed, waiting for someone to find her during those horrible minutes before the next train was scheduled to roll in, she made a vow.

“I decided to take my life in my own hands. I decided at this moment that I am going to fulfill my dreams from now until forever.”

Who doesn’t like a good motivational speech? Especially in the morning. With a full belly of delicious hotel breakfast (ahhh Israel cheese how I love you). Half way through your ROI experience.

Pascale Bercovitch’s personal story and triumph was the perfect inspiration and reminder that we ROIers needed along with a strong coffee for the long day ahead.

Al haboker (top-o- the-morning), as they say in Israel, and ROIers had already begun Connecting & Creating.

“We are a community of reciprocity,” Justin Korda told ROI during his Morning Motivation talk. While this might sound a bit Machiavellian, it’s actually the opposite. By helping one another, what ROIers are ultimately doing is changing the landscape of the entire Jewish world. It’s about Jewish engagement in new and innovative ways. Or as Justin says, it’s about becoming a network of over 1,000 Jewish leaders connecting to over a million people in the next five years! (No pressure.) Justin also introduced the new Connectors program, which will keep these face-to-face gatherings happening all year round. (Check out the details.)

Hello, Mother. Hello, Father.
Here I am at Camp ROI.
Camp is very entertaining.

It’s true. Day 1, and within minutes of getting my name tag I was warped right back to my Jew camp days. Granted, the scenery is different. It’s a fancy hotel. A conference instead of a big field. A hotel room instead of…well, bunk beds.

That said, I have a roommate and we bonded over not being able to find the control for our air conditioning. Yes, we have both been accepted to ROI but can’t figure out where these Israel hotel Mossad agents have hidden the switch (we’re on to you, though).

In the cozy embrace of a hotel that is mercifully tucked away from a blazing-hot Jerusalem, 150 young, creative Jewish people have gathered for a five-day Summit experience, forming a mini-universe full of vibrant, interesting and interested people. Everywhere we look we see the conference branding, featuring the new ROI logo made up of a multitude of connected dots that make up our globe. The message? As ROI Director Justin Korda would say, “Connect and Create,” people! Welcome to ROI-Land.
