Interactive Performances Bring Jewish Joy - El Toratrón
By Evelyn Goldfinger. Eveylyn, the Founder and Director of El Toratrón®, received a Seed Grant to produce new educational shows.
ROI Seed Grant enabled us to produce two new educational shows, one a seasonal one and one a year-round show with ten subsidized performances of each for children and adults to enjoy.
The themes chosen were the story of Jonah (a seasonal show for the Yamim Noraim time) and a show about Shabbat (now in production). The ROI Grant enable to get the shows to schools, synagogues, sport centers and non formal educational centers, that we could not reach before.
One very special performance occurred at a Jewish orphanage where children that don’t have parents or that have been abused are brought up. When we got there, the director told us to be patient since this children had big challenges in their life and that they might yell something at us, or enter the stage area or not pay attention. But during the performance, they were really engaged in the story, the costumes, the songs and not only they paid attention, but also they laughed so loud at every joke, they interacted and one could see in their faces how special this was for them; and for us. And even the coordinators relaxed and laughed. They all had a great time and were really grateful.
The ROI Grant Experience gave new impulse and El Toratrón got more exposure in institutions, spectators and media coverage. In 2011 we opened two new shows, one about Purim in a new format and one show of Yom Haatzmaut, especially requested and produced by the Embassy of Israel in Argentina and the Argentinean-Israeli cultural organization A.C.C.A.I. We performed outside Buenos Aires and future plans include touring, an educational program for children in Toratrón style and promotional videos.
