Hi fellow ROIers!

This year I had the honor of taking part in the Tikvah Fund Fellowship, a full-time, year-long, paid program based in NYC. As recruitment for the 2012-2013 Fellowship begins, I thought I would briefly share my experience so far, hoping it might be of use to any of you who may be interested in applying.

The fellowship focuses mainly on Jewish text study alongside Western philosophical and literary texts, and there is room to also explore American and Israeli politics.

Broadly speaking, the program consists of a coursework component and an individual project component. The former includes both classes in which all 20+ participants take part as well as smaller classes (4 to 14 participants). The latter includes a variety of individually planned projects and internships, for example: some of the Fellows focus on research projects; some work as research assistants in a variety of organizations in NYC and in DC; some teach in high schools, etc.

Classes are given by teachers from Yeshiva University, Harvard, JTS and more (full class details available online), and there is an impressive range of guest lecturers.

Aside from the technical details, it is important to note that one of the Tikvah Fund's greatest assets is its impressive network in areas of academia, politics, religion, just to name a few. This vast network is fully employed for the benefit of the Fellows' work. My research project, for example, concerns the issue of conversion to Judaism and to the many related conflicts. My goal is to write it using the framework of a public policy paper and I have the privilege to be working under the guidance of Prof. Ruth Gavison (a senior Israeli professor of law, recently awarded the Israel Prize), who is working in NYC this year.

If it sounds interesting, and you haven't visited the website yet – do it! http://tikvahfellowship.org/

And if you have further specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them so please be in touch.

Cheers,

Regev
