Jonah Mink loves good food, good people and good ideas. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Jonah grew up with a strong Jewish identity centered around the values of community, gratitude and tikkun olam. His life, both personally and professionally, has evolved with those values at its constant foundation. He currently lives in Israel (most of the time) with his awesome wife. He has just completed his M.D. degree at the Medical School for International Health in Beer Sheva, where he advanced his passion for community and preventive health. He is particularly enthusiastic about identifying and leveraging multidisciplinary partnerships to advance global public health and social justice. Jonah loves meeting interesting people from different backgrounds who are interested in projects that combine idealism with realism, and address the necessary economic and political practicalities in order to make a real impact on this world. Jonah is taking this year off from formal education to work on a few cool projects related to health access and equity for marginalized populations in New York and Israel. He looks forward to a career in family and preventive medicine and public health.
Jonah is currently working on a number of separate projects with similar social justice themes. The first project is the development and implementation of community based intervention to improve the financial, health and educational status of the largely marginalized population in the South Bronx in New York City. By adapting lessons learned from community programs in developing countries and other low resource settings, we are creating a sustainable system for improving the quality of life of the residents in this area of the city. The second project is a thorough assessment of the need for institutional translation services for Arabic speaking patients in southern Israeli medical facilities to promote equitable and high quality care for all patients. Jonah is currently working with leaders in this field in Jerusalem and Beer Sheva to coordinate the survey and subsequent intervention. The third project is the adaptation and implementation of a light-weight electronic medical records system for the refugee health clinics in Tel Aviv to ensure continuity of care of this generally unprotected and migratory population. Jonah is working with involved parties to conduct a needs assessment and draft an implementation strategy.
