Zaki Djemal was born in London and raised in Jerusalem. He is currently a full-time undergraduate student at Harvard. (In fact, rumor has it that he is the oldest freshman on campus.) When he is not running from class to class, Zaki is Regional Director for IsraAID in North America. Previously, Zaki worked in Nepal with the Israeli community development NGO Tevel beTzedek and in Haiti as Chief Logistics Officer of the IsraAID Relief Mission. Zaki is an experienced project manager and has worked on a variety of projects ranging from the Israel in Africa conference with Irish rock star Bob Geldof to Auburn Theological Seminary’s Prophets/Profits for Peace - a multimillion dollar investment fund for Israeli and Palestinian joint business ventures. Zaki is a prolific writer whose articles have been published by Haaretz, Ynet and Israel’s Channel 2 News. His experience as a journalist is the product of three years of service in the Israeli Army radio station, Galei Tzahal, as vice editor of the daily morning news program and field reporter during the January 2009 Gaza War.
As regional director of IsraAID in North America, Zaki acts as liaison for IsraAID s affairs in the region and is responsible for building and maintaining relations with the organization's stakeholders and donor base. IsraAID is Israel’s leading civic aid agency, coordinating 14 Israeli non-governmental aid and development organizations. IsraAID members work in over 40 developing countries, responding to humanitarian crisis and advocating for social justice. Drawing on Israeli expertise, IsraAID works alongside local NGO’s and governments to implement sustainable initiatives in healthcare, education, youth leadership, agriculture and economic development. Additionally, IsraAID seeks to improve Israel’s global image by engaging in tikkun olam and by strengthening vital strategic partnerships with countries worldwide. In over 10 years of activity, IsraAID has become Israel’s unofficial face and focal point for UN agencies, international NGO’s and senior government officials around the world. Each of IsraAID's projects is carefully crafted to address specific needs on the ground. For this reason, no project is alike and the organization flourishes on innovative new ideas that are translated into meaningful initiatives.
